I just bought a rear engine snapper yesterday and got a decent deal since the mower only goes in reverse and not forward.

If I put the mower on its back and put it in any forward gear, and spin both tires in the same direction, the rubber friction disk does not move (good contact with the drive disk) but the metal disks (with the four small bolts and large center bolt) spin.

the previous owner stated that he was trying to make an adjustment to the deck height, and when he was done, he put the mower back on its wheels and it didnt go forward any more.

thats about all I know. I've done a little esearch and dont see these symptoms listed here.

the mower model is in the subject title, and the serial number is 75642190, and instead of the 8hp motor it has a 12 hp B&S motor (replacement?)

*edited*
I did some more research and the drive disk (the disk connected to the engine shaft is 3-3/4" ~ish from the bottom of the frame. so I think that is correct as well

is this a simple drive disk adjustment or has there something inside the driven disk (with the rubber friction wheel) gone bad?

Thanks!

A neighbor has a rear engine Snapper 30", it stopped going up any slopes.. He was told by local dealer to replace that part, cost (he said) was $20. & it runs good again.. Dealer said that part is a wearable item, & does require replacement over time..

Not sure if that helps, or not..

It turns out it was the height of the drive disk. It was all out of whack. the rubber disk might be worn as well, but I just dropped the drive disk down about 1/2" and it works great.

now the blade belt is another story. i have the frame maxed out and the belt is still so loose it is vibrating all over the place.

Well that's good..

As to the belt, if the pulleys seem good etc, you may wanna take off that belt & match it up to a new one, it may just be stretched out..
