So my uncle had an old Craftsmen GT5000 that he melted the oil plug on and drained it and continues to run it until she stopped. He gave it to use because we could use the deck. Now that the deck is off, I want to work on repairing the engine as a summer project. The engine turns over too easy. Can someone explain what happened and what is going on inside the engine? And where should I start to begin repairing this thing? Thanks Yall

Off the top of my head it sound's like a broken connecting rod. You can check by inserting a screwdriver down the spark plug hole to try and reach the piston, being careful not to get it stuck slowly rotate the flywheel, If the screw drive moves up and down the connecting rod is still in tact. If not its prob broken... I would rec a shortblock. Due to lack of oil the rod seized on the crank journal and froze, causing the rod to snap. If the piston does move up and down I would say it could be a stuck valve. Start with a compression test....

violin, Can you say more about a "melted" oil drain plug? Before you go further you should check out cost. You may be surprised at high prices of new parts. Good luck.

Well I'm just going off his word on the melted plug. I haven't looked at it myself yet, just what he has been saying. All I know is that he overheated it and it drained all the oil and he didn't realize it until after he killed it. Is there something different that could be an issue? I should be able to look at it myself later today.
