My Murray model 38608x12c with a 12 hp Briggs 2281707-0415-01 engine dies soon after start. It started doing this about 20 months ago but I had moved and didn't really need a tractor so I stored it until a few months ago, and I had the carb rebuilt. I've probably used it about 8 times since then with it running great.

Now it's back to the same problem as before. Starts up. Runs great for 10 seconds. Then just shuts down.
One weird thing is that it won't fire unless I take off the air cleaner. With the air cleaner on, it will not fire at all. This just started too.

I have no idea what to do with this thing. It was just fine 5 days ago when I mowed.

Sounds like it is getting too much fuel. I would check the float adjustments along with the fuel adjustments

Some of the older 28 series engine had an impulse fuel pump... if you have one check it is working correctly.

Have the carb rebuilt again. I'll bet a new needle/seat will solve the problem along with ultrasonically cleaning. If it has been standing around for an extended period of time with the old fuel in it, it is probably gummed up.

Is the filter dirty. If will only start with the filter off sounds like it can not get any air threw the filter

(( cowboy up and get over it ))
