I have a new Honda HRN216 mower. The user manual (image below) shows to mow Counter Clockwise (CCW) for mulch and Clockwise (CW) for bagging.
That is opposite of my mowing pattern with the previous mower (not a Honda).
What in the design makes that direction better?
Is that common?
Have you found a difference?

Clippings are always thrown to the right side. When mulching you're greatly limited by how much grass the deck can process. Some mulched grass escapes from under the deck and is thrown to the right. Going counter-clockwise you won't run it over again and overload the deck and it should be cut up fine enough that it can remain there. But when bagging you want to capture the grass that's been thrown out from under the deck. So going clockwise you'll pick up any grass that was thrown out from under the deck the last time around.

I hope that makes sense. Personally I just mow straight back and forth regardless of whether I'm bagging or mulching.
