I have an early 2000s Scag Tigercub with a Briggs and Stratton 24 or 27hp engine. I just replaced the starter solenoid and checked to make sure it ran fine after the install it did. Today I went out to start it up and it wouldn’t crank so I had to hook it up to a battery charger (see pictures). This happens quite a bit. The battery won’t keep a charge well. After charging it awhile I tried it again but had no luck. It turned the fan but wouldn’t fully catch and start. I then tried turning the fan manually with my hand to give it some help but no luck. In fact it starting turning on its own without me starting it with the key. I thought that was odd. I then left and came back after awhile; the whole time it was charging. This time when I tried starting it I got nothing. I took the battery cables off and blew them out with an air compressor and put them back on. When I reattached the charger the key start still had no effect but then the motor begin making a funny noise every 30 seconds or so when the charger kicked on. It even made the sound when the seat switch was not engaged and when the key was not in! If I detached the charger the weird noise went away. I got a video of the noise. Anyone know what is going on?

Three possible options. One something is connected wrong allowing battery voltage to the small terminal on the solenoid. You have a short in the wiring allowing battery power to the small terminal on the solenoid, or the new solenoid is toast.

If you have a test light, connect it to the - (neg) side of the battery, then touch an engine mounting bolt, the block or some other ground. I'm guessing you have a positive ground.
I've seen this before on a different brand ztn, but can't remember exactly what was actually wrong. My memory escapes me, even when it's under lock & Chain. But it'll come to me later on, and I'll post about it.
