DIESEL FUMES

hello.. i have a lx277 with a 48". 2 wheel drive. I bought it brand-new over 20 years ago and I do all my maintenance on it.. i have had a problem with the blades engaging. It started out that sometimes I would have to move the switch up and down acouple times to engage. Then it started where I would have to push down on the forward pedal in order for them to engage. Now it seems to be getting worse. I have gone through all of the connections that I could find and clean them.. any other ideas ? I don't see where there is an adjustment on the clutch. Unless I'm missing it.. thanks for your help
