Is there supposed to be a place in the brake / clutch pedal throw that is free wheeling?
Mine goes from in gear to brake when you press on it.
I thought it was supposed to be in gear / clutch disengaged / brake as you press on pedal.

The brake is either on or off
It is not progressive
It works by locking the layshaft which over rides the diff so the wheels can only turn in opposite directions
This is also how the P on a car automatic gear box works
To free wheel there is a bypass on the transmission
The clutch & brake work off a single pedal so there is an adjustment, normally close the the brake so you can adjust the brake to engage just as the clutch allows the belt to slip on the engine pulley
I often adjust this gap a bit bigger so usually older people can take off without the jolt but no way to stop the jolt on braking
