Loss of power

Got a weird issue going on. I have a Scag STC52V-27CV-SS. Within the last week, I have been experiencing an issue with a loss of power. It's not all the time, it seems random. The mower starts running rough, it has a different sound to it. It's almost like the choke it on, although it's not. It smells very rich while running like this, and it barely has enough power to turn the blades while this is going on.

Randomly, something will seem to catch (just as it did to cause the problem) and it goes away and the mower runs fine. I don't have a clue what this could be. ANY help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Found the problem to be the magneto on the right side.

Before you toss the magneto, tru running the engine with the cover off and magnetos disconnected from each other.
There is a diode between the two of them so they don't interfear with each other .
It is in a bad spot . overheats and fails.
OTOH it is 50¢ from who ever took over from Radio Shack
