Repairs Lawnmower project

I don't know if this belongs here, but I need tips. I am making an Ariens emperor 8 into a go-kart. The mower itself is the 1-cylinder 8hp model. It will take a lot of work and probably won't be worth it, but the idea is stuck in my head. I plan to get it running again after forty years of use (Which will be a miracle in itself), remove the mower deck, and maybe give it some more power. I got it from my grandpa who got it from his dad. It is in pretty rough shape, but for forty years, it is not that bad. Any tips dealing with repair and design will be much appreciated. Thanks!
