I just picked up a brick top Model 5024, D engine, and pulled the flywheel off to check points and coil ... upon replacing everything I noticed the governor springs drops down through a slot in the framework of the mower, (closed boxed end) but it does not connect to anything. What part am I missing to offer leverage to the spring? I am not seeing it on schematic charts either. Here is a pic of the spring.

Your Lawnboy is 1972 engine D-600 and that did not have a variable governor control.Engines D-400 was equipped with variable governor with operating speed of 2500 RPM-normal up to 3200 RPM heavy.Dan

Thanks for your reply. Strange ... the spring and slot that was machined for it, do nothing then?
