Hey everyone,
I'm new the forum and have some questions about this lawn boy lawn mower. I've been buying and selling small engine equipment for the past couple years as a hobby and to make a bit of extra cash on the side. Just a few days ago i went in to my shed to see what mowers I might have in there that would need attention to get read for the spring. I found this old Lawn Boy in there that I had bought at a garage sale in late 2014. The mower is model 8241AE with a serial of B264B0072. The problem I have is that this mower has no pull start. It is key start only and of course the battery is dead. I didn't receive a charger with it when I bought it as I didn't even notice that it had no pull start. I suppose there is a small chance that the battery may still be good, but I don't have any way to charge it. Are there any other options? I am sure the mower will need a good carb cleaning to get it running. It doesn't look to be in too bad of shape given its age. Can anybody provide any suggestions on how to work with this mower with no pull start and no charger? Thanks.

Hi there, and welcome to the Lawn-Boy forum. Those are really good mowers. I believe that one has a Walbro carburetor (metal bowl). As far is the battery, chargers are still available. I don't believe they are that expensive. Check eBay. Batteries Plus is a good place to start in my area. They have replacement batteries for less than $30-$40. Its been a while since I have had to buy one, but they weren't that expensive. You could probably get away with using a regular trickle charger for a short time to see if your current battery will take a charge, but be careful. Good luck

8241ae has the black plastic 4 hp carburetor. If you can find a top cup and starter rope from a model 10515, 10520, 10545, ect.... Is the best option. You simply remove the flywheel bolt add the cup put the flywheel bolt back on tighten and put the four screws in the metal plate and starter rope assembly. Or if you want to replace the battery batteries plus has a 12v alarm system battery for $22. This is what I have been using on my pre-1986 lawn boy electric starts. I am very familiar with this model and if you have anymore questions I would be happy to help!

Thanks to you both for the information. I would much rather put a pull starter on it as I'm just looking to fix it and sell it. Buying a charger and battery is only going to reduce the amount of profit I'd make. I know i have some other Lawn Boy parts laying around, so maybe I'll get lucky and actually have a top cup and starter rope from one of the models you mentioned. Seems really strange to me that they would ever have created a mower that didn't have a starter rope with it. Any Idea what a mower like this is worth on Craigslist in good working order?
