STALLS UNDER LOAD UNLESS I RUN AT 1/2 CHOKE.

My B&S 18 hp engine died and I repaced it with another identical engine which came from an identical mower.

This mower has a single down draft carb.

It runs fine at idle.
I can only mow if I keep the choke about .5 on.

The bowl was clean and float appeared to be working.
Fuel filter was new last year.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Chuck

Partially clogged high speed circuit of carb possibly. You did give us the model number of the engine, so I can only speculate which style of carb you have.

I see you are in California. What is your elevation? I am in the Inland Empire and do service for the Mount Baldy fire department (high elevation) and had to re jet some of their 4 st engines. They seem to starve for fuel a lot under load. Working with B & S to solve this problem when their other service center could not resolve it, secured me the service contract with Mt Baldy FD

I am about 150 feet off the ocean in NW Krazyfornia.

Put on a new fuel filter, cleaned and blew the carb with compressed air, changes out the plugs.

Carb cleaning made little difference.
I think the plugs were a big part of the issue.
