Kohler Courage running rough

A friend of mine is having trouble with his mower. It's a Husqvarna with a 21hp Kohler Courage engine (SV610). A few weeks ago I changed the oil, filter, fuel filter, and plug in his mower for him. He's had the mower a few years and had never done anything to it. When I drained the oil very little drained out- maybe 1 cup. Started it and ran it for a bit after getting done with everything and it ran fine. He started it for the first time since today and it ran very poorly. Sputtering, blowing out black smoke sometimes, etc. Starts right up though. I pulled the carb off (Walbro) , cleaned it and blew it out with compressed air. Looked pretty good inside- a little bit of dirt in the bottom of the bowl. Put it back on and it runs the same as it did before. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like it is running rich, is the choke opening fully after starting. If it is, I suspect you are going to have to rebuild the carb.

Yes the choke is opening fully. I forgot to mention a few things last night. I pulled the air cleaner and started it up to check the choke and noticed the butterfly was opening and closing a lot where the governor spring attaches. Also when it would miss it would spit a little fuel out of the carb.

I've been reading on here more and starting to think it may be a sheared flywheel key. The way it's running does sound like the timing is off...

It's always the little things lol. Pulled flywheel and the key was good. Started going over everything very carefully since I had more time today. Found that the universal fuel filter (a little bigger than the original) was just barely touching part of the linkage going to the carb. Didn't have any fuel line with me to make it a little longer so put a zip tie on it to hold it down a little and keep it off the linkage.
