KOHLER 16 MAGNUM DITCHWITCH 1620 STARTER PROBLEMS

HI,

STARTER TURNED THE ENGINE OVER AND ACTED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO START. ALL OF A SUDDEN, STARTER JUST CLICKED LIKE THE SOLENOID WAS TRYING BUT TO NO AVAIL. I MANUALLY ENGAGED THE DRIVE AND USED THE BELT TO TURN THE ENGINE OVER IN CASE IT WAS A STUCK BENDIX. I THEN JUMPED BATTERY TO MY CAR BUT IT STILL JUST CLICKED. THEN I STUPIDLY PUT THE POSITIVE JUMPER LEAD DIRECTLY ON THE STARTER TERMINAL AND IT SPARKED. NOW THE STARTER DOES NOT EVEN CLICK ANYMORE. DID I RUIN THE STARTER OR HURT SOMETHING ELSE IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SUCH AS THE SAFTIES OR INTERRUPTS? I NEED A WIRING DIAGRAM FOR THIS INCLUDING SCHEMATIC AND PICTORIAL OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE SYSTEM. I COULD ALSO USE SOME ADVICE --- PLEASE. THANK YOU

Directl energising the starter motor will not do any damage provided you do not do it backwards.
You get a bit spark because it draws a lot of power which is which they use a solenoid in the first place.
Remove the starter and try powering it with jumpers directly from either your car battery or mower battery
Hold it tight because it will leap out of your hands if it is working properly
If it spins then put it back in
If not pull it apart and check the brushes .

WELL ALL OF YOU MECHANICS - I SURPRISED MYSELF AND FOUND THE REASON THAT IT STOPPED CLICKING - A SAFETY MICRO SWITCH SHAFT NEEDED LUBED AND IT STARTED WORKING AS IT SHOULD. IT PROTECTS FROM STARTING THE ENGINE IF THE JOY STICK IS NOT IN NEUTRAL... NOW ALL I HAVE TO DO IS FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE THE GAS TANK TO GET TO THE STARTER WHICH I AM PRETTY SURE IS BAD. I WOULD STILL LOVE TO HAVE THE ELECTRICAL SCHEMATICS REQUESTED BEFORE THOUGH. DOES ANYONE HAVE A LINK TO THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR THE 1620 GASOLINE ENGINE DITCHWITCH?. THANKS!

HI BERT. THANK YOU. THAT IS JUST WHAT I INTEND TO DO AS SOON AS I GET THE FUEL TANK FIGURED OUT. I FOUND THE 2 NUTS THAT LOOSEN THE TOP BUT HOW THE FUEL TANK IS CONNECTED AND HELD IN AT THE BOTTOM IS A MYSTERY. I KNOW FUEL LINES ARE INVOLVED BUT SURELY THEY DESIGNED AN EASY WAY TO REMOVE THE TANK WITHOUT A STRUGGLE!. I HOPE. IT IS PRETTY LATE AND WAY TOO COLD TONIGHT TO WORK ANY MORE ON IT SO TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY.

SO I DISCOVERED THE 2 NUTS TO REMOVE FROM THE STUDS ON THE BOTTOM OFF THE TANK AND TANK LIFTED OUT EXPOSING THE STARTER. IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE STARTER WON'T SLIDE OUT BECAUSE THE HYDRAULIC TANK DIPSTICK TUBE IS IN THE WAY. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW THE HYDRAULIC TANK DIPSTICK TUBE IS HELD IN PLACE? HOW IS THE STARTER HELD IN PLACE? I AM PRETTY OLD AND PROCEED WITH CAUTION THESE DAYS. A QUESTION ANSWERED CAN SAVE A LOT OF TROUBLE SOMETIMES. .THANK YOU

I DON'T THINK THEY WANT TO BE GOTTEN HOLD OF. I HAVE TRIED. NOT VERY HELPFUL THESE FORUMS SEEM TO BE THE WAY TO GO.. A LOT OF FELLOWS WILLING TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE. THANK YOU.
