Hydrolocked or something else?

Hello,

Working on a Ryobi # 80544 with a R210III 212cc engine.

I can only pull the starter rope on every like 4th try - its stuck on the other 3 times i try to pull it. So ii I take out the spark plug and pull the rope, no problem it rotates easily. I was expecting to see either oil or gas coming out of the exhaust or spark plug hole but nothing came out. If I look into the hole of the plug i can see the piston and it is dry. I can see gas near the choke on the carb - looks wet.

I'm not sure what the source of the problem could be. Before this happened I took the head off to inspect for a "no-start" problem - but I was always able to pull the rope then. I made sure I was at TDC and I set the correct valve lash.

Any direction is appreciated.

First make the valves are adjusted to spec. IF they are check the ACR bump of one the rockers. IF not present then the camshaft has failed.

Thanks. Valves are adjusted to spec. I just found out what an ACR and how it works...But how to check the ACR bump of a rocker?

With the rocker cover off watch the rockers as you rotate as few complete turns in the engine's normal rotating direction. As you approach TDC compression stroke both rockers should the valves closed but just as about to reach TDC one rocker will open one valve slightly and then close quickly as you keep turning.

Ok i see the exhuast valve bump but its not on the compression stroke its the other stroke...how's that possible?

sorry - it is bumping the exhaust valve on the compression stroke but I don't think that the bump is big enough to open the valve to reduce compression. If my valves are adjusted correctly would it still be a cam issue?

Are you sure you adjusted at TDC on the compression stroke and not the exhaust? Although, I'm not sure if that would create this or the opposite problem, lack of compression. Someone else can confirm or deny that. Sometimes if the head is still on and I'm too lazy to find TDC, I'll check each lash with the other valve wide open. That way you know the target valve is clear of the lobe.
