Hello All,
Help needed!! I have a B&S 17.5 ohv engine and would like to know the position of rings on piston. One ring has a star mark on it. Does this ring go in the top or middle position? I know the star mark goes up. I saw a video that stated the one with the mark goes in the top grove of piston, is that true? Thanks for any replies.

Piston rings come with a sheet showing the proper installation, even after market rings do. I can send you a Service Manual for that engine IF you like, address below, put in proper format and remind me the model number and what you want.

I have no idea what the cylinder temp is.

Rocky, Be sure to check all the specs on ring installation. Thickness, end gap, piston land (groove width), position etc. Lots of effort to come back apart. My Briggs Intek head has measured 305F at the plug in summer. I tried to measure heat at the valve guides but could not get a valid reading. I suspect running temp of 350F and more there. The measurements were made with an industrial thermometer and probe. The sump oil has been measured @275F but the oil temp gauge often is near 285F in summer , even with an oil cooler. When people say "overheat" they are never specific, but (old saw) aluminum will soften at 395F and the little ignition modules fail @ 250F and below.
