honda hrb216hxa crank bolt removal

Hello. I am trying to remove the roto-stop assembly to check it because the roto-stop cable got damaged (see my other thread about the recall work:http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/honda...-older-honda-recall-notices-2.html#post113251). It seems the dealer over-tightened the crankshaft bolt because I am having a hard time removing it. I tried holding the flywheel bolt (that loosened first) and using a strap wrench around the flywheel to hold the crankshaft still. I have heard about putting a rope into the cylinder via the spark plug hole, but I am afraid of bending the valves or breaking something. Any other ideas?

Ok. I got the crank bolt off by holding the flywheel with the strap wrench. I had found what I thought were metal shavings, but it looks like the coating/paint on the new brake plate is flaking off. Is this going to be a problem? Also, could someone please post the correct torque for the roto-stop crank bolt.

The 10 x 24 hex bolt that tightens into the crankshaft uses a standard torque of 34 Nm (3.5 kg-m, 25 ft-lb).

FYI, the flywheel nut is a special case; it needs 52 Nm (5.3 kg-m, 38 ft-lb).

Thanks, Robert. In my case, the flywheel nut was really loose and the crank bolt was way too tight! I am going to replace the roto-stop cable and brake plate return spring. I don't know if the springs weaken over time, but I can't figure out what else could be the problem. Maybe the super tight crank bolt was the reason the brake plate wasn't fully releasing.

Thanks, Robert. I am still waiting for the roto-stop cable (on backorder), but if you have information about how it is supposed to be routed/anchored that would be great. The only thing I can think of is zip-tying it to the change cable to keep it away from the moving parts. This is for frame serial MAAA-1017686.

Thanks, Robert. You attached a lot more pages than the roto-stop so you may want to check the file. I took the machine to the dealer for the recall as you noted. I don't know if they didn't anchor the roto-stop cable or it was already like that, but it was damaged nevertheless by the moving parts.

What IS the best method for removing the 14MM shaft bolt? Impact wrench? I'm trying to remove the one on my HR214 in order to remove the roto-stop for piston ring replacement, and it won't budge.

Strap wrench around the flywheel and a good long breaker bar should do it. Impact would be okay for removal too, but not installation. Use a torque wrench only.
