Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping someone can help me with an issue. I have a Grasshopper mower Model 1822 with a B&S 18hp model 422437 Type 0678 01 Code 83112912 and only has 530 hrs on it and the engine is bad. I know the unit is really old and I've been told that I can't get a replacement engine for it. Is there a company that has this engine or what are my options. Other than the engine the rest of the mower is in great shape.

You mean "bad" as in it's involved in under-age drinking, or "bad" as in it mugs little old ladies on the subway at night ?? Can you describe what this term means ? And how does the problem reveal itself ?

One of the connecter rods is broken. I was using it and the engine made a rattling noise and then the engine rev up and no response when I lowered the throttle. I checked the governor springs and linkage all looked good. So I took it to a repair shop and they told me the rod was probably broke and broke the governor inside the engine. Then they said there isn't a replacement engine for it and parts are obsolete since it's a 1983 engine. So I'm looking for some help or ideas on how to get my mower going again.

Well he did pull the spark plugs while I was there and one cylinder didn't have compression, so I know something is broke inside engine.

Actually the diagnosis fits the symptoms quite well .
What we need to know is the actual engine numbers
Being in a hopper It is most likely a horizontal shaft engine and probably a flat twin but we really need to know more to go any further .

easy check you can do...
remove the spark plug(s) insert a pencil or something of similar diameter into the bore rotate the engine... if one of the pistons doesn't move. most likely its a broken rod, that also took out the governor gear inside the engine.

Some one with dealer access to the Power Portal might do better but the civilian version recognizes the numbers then comes back with "no information available "

I checked the engine and one of the pistons isn't moving.
I checked this website https://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/Repower-Old-Equipment/Grasshopper-1822-Category and there is a engine that says it's a replacement for Grasshopper 1822

356447-WODS5182-R3
18hp OHV V-Twin, Conversion kit to fit into a Woods 5180 5182 Grass Hopper 1820 1822 1825 1850 Briggs & Stratton Engine

But at the bottom of the page where it says

FITS THESE MODELS

  • Woods 5180,5181,5182 & Grass Hopper 1820,1825,1850
The1822 isn't listed. What do you guys thank, will this engine work?

Yes it says that but at the end of listing where it says

FITS THESE MODELS

  • Woods 5180,5181,5182 & Grass Hopper 1820,1825,1850
The 1822 isn't. That's my concern. I emailed the company but haven't heard back from them.

It could just be human error when writing that page. Emailing them was the best thing to do.

Thanks for all the info, now my decision is do I try and rebuild my engine or buy the Woods engine. I'm leaning more towards buying than rebuilding.

3 part numbers for cylinder - 394687, or 394900 which supersedes to 497075. I have a 497075 in surplus stock I will sell for reasonable price, but suggest you make a list of needed parts and see what is available. Right now the website to check stock on cylinder current price and stock is down. The Cylinder I have is new, returned with a small section of the top fin broken, was replaced to customer on warranty.

I am totally new to GH mowers having obtained my 1822 ONLY THIS MORNING. But since it is a horizontal shaft engine I see no reason a different horizontal engine could not be substituted. ( This is based only on first observation and zero experience with this mower ! ) It is just a thought.
