Help MTD Yard Machine

Hi ,

New to forum just happen to come across it while searching for solutions to my riding mower problem.
Okay I have a MTD Yard Machine 46 inch Deck (Model#13AN601H729). I was riding when all of a sudden I noticed Black smoke coming from under engine when Blades where engaged, I disengaged and parked machine the engine Pulley was super hot . I let it cool Started it up to check what was going on and the pulley was going really fast and still causing a bit of smoke so I shut it down. I tried to find answers online unsuccessfully . I removed the belt and it is still fine. I don't want to kill it. I started up without Belt attached no smoke but the Pulley was full speeed turning Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you. Oh I am pretty handy and have done my own repairs and upkeep of my mower by finding solutions online . I wish I knew about this forum before

From the parts diagram it appears that you have a manual engagement deck, so the pulley on the engine turns the whole time the engine is running, and then a cable pulls a idler arm to put tension on the belt to engage the blades. First thing to check would be all the idler pulleys on the deck, and also make sure that all three spindles turn freely, being aware that some of the spindles may have a brake on them. Remove the belt to the engine pulley, engage the blades, and this should release the brakes on the spindles. I suspect that that one of the spindles has locked up, or maybe wrapped something into the blades preventing it from turning.

Thank you I am going to jump in on this STAT . I already have the belt removed so it should be easy to check deck .

So The Engine Pulley is supposed to spin all the time ? Then when I manually move the Lever to engage the blades the tension would cause the deck pulleys to turn . Clarifying in my head .

UPDATE

Thank you for your help this far ILENGINE . I cleaned the entire cutting I blew it out with air every pulley turned very easy. I noticed the brake next to the pulley and paid extra careful attention in cleaning it up and made sure it moved freely.
With your advice completed I turned on machine and WOOO HOOOO no smoke everything appeared to be working fine.

By eye I believed the burning of belt might have caused it to stretch. It looked lose. I engaged the blades no smoke everything turned but the 2 pulleys that engage were shaking really bad. Would a stretched belt cause the excess shaking ??
I went under deck and made sure every bolt is tight as it should be. I'm going to order a new belt regardless to replace this one I just want to make sure I have it running perfect so I don't kill the new Belt . Any thoughts ??

Thank You Im ordering new belt. I'll let her rest until the new belt arrives. They sell they exact length belt and the Auto Store.

MTD belts tend to have there own width and angle cut, so generic belts don't tend to last long, or work correctly on MTD mowers. I have found the same thing on JD mowers also. To avoid issue use only OEM belts, or OEM style from the major aftermarket parts suppliers.

Update Edit :
Ordered OEM belt it's actually a 1/4 inch longer than the ones the try to sell in the stores thanks for the Heads up ! Will be here by Wed.

So hopefully when this new belt is one the shaking will no longer be there ! Fingers crossed . Thanks guys for the help . I will update once I install the new belt.
While cleaning I noticed my headlights where out. found wires that are in protected plastic were cut from opening and closing hood for gassing up. So I rewired and they work.
I like this Do it yourself projects. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of there weekend !!!

Okay so update I installed the OEM Belt. I compared the OEM to the one that was installed by Lawn Mower place that is now no longer open (No Wonder)
he new one is I tad longer and much thicker . Surprise !!! It worked well and I started to do the lawn when all of a sudden nothing ! Look under and the
Spring 932-0594A is broken. I have to order it now.

Also You guys know how if you turn ignition key to center a red light goes on to go in Reverse with blades on ? That light is staying on and when attempting to go in reverse the machine
will shut down any ideas on cause and how to correct ??

There should also be a button in the area of the key switch that you also have to push to go in reverse. the other thing to check is to make sure the headlights work. For some reason they wired the reverse safety system through the headlight circuit.
