Hello everyone

Thanks for letting me join. USAF living overseas right now looking for some help. I've been searching all over trying to find a muffler for my LawnBoy.

Year = 1984
Model = 7271 with BBC

I'm pretty sure the part number = 684089 which has been discontinued.

Here are a few pics from another forum - HERE.

Any ideas on were to look?

TIA
Clayton

The best places are ebay and lawnmower salvage yards. Shouldn't be much of a problem.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

I can't spend the big money to buy from Partstree so I'll start looking on ebay and salvage yards.

I love my Lawnboy but it seems like a bad design to put the muffler under the deck exposing it to grass and the damp. I've tried hard to keep it clean since I've owned it but however had it before me didn't love it as much.

Are there any other models that I could yank a muffler from????

Thanks again!

Hi Clayton, your original muffler was a stamped steel assm and was replaced by a multi piece aluminum casting on later model mowers. The steel muffler would rust out , while the thicker alum. casting will hold up. All of the BBC equipped LB mowers use the same muffler. They sometimes show up on Ebay.

If your mower is "rough" enough to have a rusted-out muffler, then you might be better off finding a good salvage mower and using yours as a parts source for it.

A mower being in "rough" condition has nothing to do with a poorly designed muffler with blind passages for dampening the two cycle bark, these blind or dead end passages accumulate acid water vapor which is what causes the rusting through of the steel muffler shell. That and owners that don't keep the under side of the deck clear of grass build up, between the top of the muffler and the bottom side of the deck. The later cast aluminum thick walled mufflers on the later BBC models solved the problem whether it was a mint condition well maintained mower with a rusted out muffler or a beat up piece that no one made any attempt at servicing it, if you have the early steel muffler it will rust out regardless of the condition of the mower.

Thanks for the info. That makes sense that LB would recognize a bad design and address it with improvements on future models.

I don't really know what other models where equipped with BBC and when looking on ebay, I have no idea which muffler would fit my model. Any suggestions on what to look for?

TIA

This is going to be hard to do while living in England. I'm not sure how popular lawnboys were in the UK and I'm not sure the Brits do a salvage yard for mowers.

I'd love to have an extra mower to use for parts but again they'll be hard to come by and expensive. The BBC doesn't work on my mower as well as having problems with the muffler, I could use a bunch of spare parts.

I 'll have to look into it and ask around. Thanks.

Well, there WERE Lawnboy mowers in the European market, I believe assembled in Belgium. The Brits have salvage yards for almost everything.
