Fuel Fuel Tank Removal

Hello, I have a Scag Turf Tiger (Model STT61-22KA) and it appears to have a cracked fuel tank. I can't figure out how to remove it and can find no service manuals that will help. Does anyone know how to remove the single tank located under seat on this model Scag ZTR?

Scaggs does not offer repair manuals and I doubt anyone has had to change one out.

Make sure your serial number is listed in range of your model. For safety remove negative battery cable & tuck out of the way. Visually study parts that need to be removed for access to fuel tank, take your time, you may need a helper on this project. Be sure to replace items 48-50, bushing, hose fitting, & fuel hose on pages 16 & 17, as you will probably find bushing & fuel hose hard & possibly cracked. Use vaseline on new bushing, then install hose fitting in bushing & then push into fuel tank by hand. You may find that bushing is culprit & source of leak. Let us know how it goes, thanks.

From the exploded parts view, I would remove the support plate and drop it down under the mower.

Thanks a bunch! That is exactly what I did last night. I have the tank free but need to pull the drive shaft to actually remove it completely. Any trick to remove the drive shaft, or does it work just like a car?

It appears that tank has an 'exposed' section that drops down further on the driver's right side and sometimes the belt impacts the tank when the deck hits something like a tree root. It is a poor design that should have a protected side with metal toward the belt and not a polyethylene tank side - or better yet, not have that bit of tank below the plate holding the whole thing up. I'm going to try to epoxy a metal shield on the new tank to keep this from happening again. Thanks for the help.

The shaft has a slip lock near the engine side. Slide the collor towards the drive shaft and pull. Similar to air hose.

Thanks for all of your help. I dropped the lower plate, mower deck (which was easy) and pulled the driveshaft to the mower deck. Tank came right out. Installed the new one hooked it all up and found out the shutoff valve was leaking, too. Another $30 for a new one and I'm back in business!
