Flywheel magnet broke off, engine will not start

Hi folks,

New to the forum, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a 08 Toro riding mower with a 20 HP B&S Intek engine. The engine quit on me while I was mowing and I did not run over any objects. After removing the flywheel cover, I discovered that the external flywheel magnet had broken off with pieces jammed into the teeth of the flywheel and starter. I'm assuming this is the reason why the engine will not start however I'm not sure I'm a complete novice when it comes to this. Can I purchase a replacement magnet or do I have to buy the flywheel assembly? The sears rep had advised that they do not sell it separately.

Could there be another reason?

I would think it would be sold as a balanced assembly. I just never came across a flywheel that the magnet broke off. Did something hit the flywheel for this to happen? If I was you I would check everything under the flywheel cover for more damage.

Yep agreed look for other damage see if you can work out why this happens, and yes this is why it won't start.

Yes, a magnet cast tightly into a flywheel that has been broken/torn from it's mount needs some added info.....period.......

I doubt that this is true, but who can tell with new posters and all....And my usual friends will be along shortly as well...

Here is the picture of the broken magnet and flywheel. I replaced the flywheel, flywheel key,rebuild my carb, fuel filter, new battery, new spark plug, and installed a new starter but the engine will not fire. Added fresh fuel and new oil.
I checked the valves and appears to be fine, measured with a valve feeler. I have noticed that after several attempts to start the engine, the flywheel key is sheared in half. I have gone through 3 flywheel keys and I can't seem to figure it out.
I did notice that the original flywheel key was made out of a stronger metal then the replacement keys that I had purchased. I do have spark when turning the ignition, there is also a mist of gas that sprays out of the air intake valve above the carb.

The model is 331777 0946 B2, B&G OHV, 540cc, 20 HP Intek

The only thing that it could hit would be the coil, and an impact like that surely did damage on the coil and the posts that the coil mounts on. , so post some pictures of that, and
I might start to at least believe a tiny shred of this thread.

It sure broke off. Maybe a defect when the flywheel was made. It looks like it could of only been fasten on one side?? I really don't think that the magnet is replaceable and you will need another flywheel for sure. In all my years of repairs I find I don't always know a reason or why something happens.
