I have a liquid cooled Kawi FD501V on a JD LX279. It's recently been smoking on start up but clearing up quickly. It has not been getting worse, did it the last half of the season. I ran it a week ago, same thing, not any better or worse. Oil level is good. I figured it's probably getting time for new rings.

Went to start today and it turns over but no start. Full of fuel, fuel is delivered to carb. Good spark on both sides. Won't start with starter fluid. Backfiring out of the carb.

Where should I begin to troubleshoot?

This is a liquid cooled so checking the flywheel key isn't a simple process, requires draining and removing the radiator. If there are simpler things to check first I'd like to start there.

Answered my own question... I pulled the plugs and they were both fouled. Cleaned them and it started fine. Guess it's time to address the ring issue.
