Is there some trick to getting the bronze self propelled gear off the shaft?

Trigger, Send a pic. Maybe that will help.

Some "F" engines used a gear, some used a pulley for a belt. Generally there is a set-screw (for pulley), but also generally the crankshaft below the mowing deck is too gunked up to allow the pulley to slide off. I take the engine and use a wire-brush wheel on my grinder to polish up the shaft and then it slides off quite nicely.

Trigger, Thanks for the pic, but I cannot really see the gear so cannot comment. Closer pic?

I was wondering if you had any measurements of the port heights or widths and timing of the F series lawn boy engine? or if you could take any while it's apart

Isn't the timing fixed due to where the key is positioned at the factory by machining the slot on the flywheel?

I meant the timing of the exhaust port and transfer ports. The ignition timing is what you're talking about and is generally non adjustable
