Extreme newbie!! Questions galour! :)

Hello all!

I'm the new guy! Gonna try to transform a riding mower into a ride-on train for my annual holiday display. Can't afford much right now, so picked up a freebie off Craigslist. Its a MTD Yard Master with a Briggs & Stratton. The motor model number is 42A707, Type 2238 E1, Code 9801305B. My first question is....how do I hook up some wiring to this thing?? The previous owner hacked and rewired things to such and extent that all the wires going to the motor were cut , shredded or replaced. Basicly, I have a three wire harness coming off the motor with a red, black, and white wire. Where should I start in trying to jump this into purring??

I can't speak for the previous owner's wiring job, but all you need are three wires to the motor. One will be a large guage wire going from the solenoid to the starter. The second will be a small guage wire from the alternator, which is under the flywheel, to the battery side of the solenoid. And the last will be another small guage wire from the ignition switch to the ignition coil, this wire is used to ground the coil when you turn the key to the off position.

As far as the ignition switch goes.....You'll have a wire from the battery side of the solenoid to the battery terminal on the switch; a wire from the start terminal to the solenoid coil, this is probably a small spade terminal on the side; a wire from the ground terminal to a good frame or engine ground; and finally a wire from the terminal that goes to ground when you turn the switch off to the coil, right now I'm having a brain fart and can't think what that terminal might be called.
