Hello Folks,

First time poster from the UK :)

I have a Murray wide body ride on mower with a B & S 12.5 hp engine, (125/96) which was my late fathers, that I maintain - it must be at least 15 years old, will supply more detail off of the engine if required(?) but I thought this may pass as a bit of a general question ? . . . . . .

Talking to friend the other day, he asked about oil and filters for it, I mentioned that in all the years we've had it, I'd checked and topped up the oil, but as far as I knew it didn't have, and I couldn't see, an oil filter of any sort for it - fuel filter and air filter yes, but no oil filter. His question was a fair one, and it got me curious, so I went searching around, Murrays site seemed to suggest not all engines may have an oil filter, my friend was convinced it should have at least a paper filter . . . . . I was planning to replace the oil soon with clean new oil, I know where the square sump plug is at the base of the dipstick/filler portal, so I thought I'd at least ask the question here rather than keep finding conflicting info! I have the original manual, and even this doesn't even mention oil apart from where to fill and check it, which leads me to believe that this simple type of engine doesn't really need an oil filter ??

Thanks in advance :)

I know here in the U.S. they started putting oil filters on lots of small engines maybe 10-12 years ago. Some of the manufactures like Onan have been putting filters on their engines 40+ years. If you look and don't see a filter then, well you get the idea. Not all small engines have filters.

No the small 12.5 HP don't have an oil filter.

Usually an oil filter is fitted around the 14 HP mark.
