I need to repower a pressure washer with a used engine. My neighbor's 6HP Flat Head Briggs vertical shaft blew a head gasket and ate the piston / cylinder. It has that off center three bolt mounting to the frame.

I believe the shaft is a bit over 3" long and 7/8 diameter with keyway.

I have been considering using a engine from a used lawn mower.

Question: Can I use a mower engine on this pressure washer? Are the shafts the same length and diameter? There are a lot of used mowers out there to purchase. Does anyone have any experience with this swap idea?

I need;
  • 2+ inch shaft
  • 7/8" shaft diameter
  • offset three hole mounting.
  • any other considerations, like differences between a mower and P-washer, like linkages and such.

thanks to all,
/cp

There are many different setups.
post a pic\model numbers so we can tell u.

There are a few different quantums that are used on power washers. Some are the plain briggs. It is like a mower with 1 catch- it has a heavier flywheel than the mower setup.
Some use a Quantum with a stubby shaft, others with a tapered shaft.

Apparently the shaft shrank, it is cold outside though. Looks more like 2 inch now. hope pics help figuring the puzzle.

A closing update:

Well, I tried to find a Briggs to fit this need. I did drag home a Briggs mower engine but the shaft was way too long but would work with a different crankshaft I believe. Hope this helps someone in the future. Now looking for a Briggs powered Pressure Washer with a blown pump. hours of fun being had by all.

Crankshaft PTO ends can be shorten as long you have the same keyway width which in your case is 3/16". And as long it upper profile (next the sump cover) is correct.

thanks for the thought. I did consider taking a hack saw (no real machine shop stuff here) to shorten. Not sure if I have enough keyway as the orig engine is 1.8 inches long. I will check it out though. Maybe some spacers and a cut would get me in the ball park. thanks!
