Deck for it to work

I own a Craftsman yt3000, Me and my Father recently took the deck off of it because of it being broke, and it wasn't the first time we took it off, But now when we took it off the thing won't even crank or make a sound, My question is do we really need the deck on to have it run or no?

You don’t give us much to go on, so I’ve got a couple of questions. Manual or electric PTO? Is the manual PTP lever in the off position? Is the electric PTO switch off? When you post back make sure you include all tractor and engine numbers, or we will be asking for them.
