Cub 1420 runs wide open

A friend gave me his old rider and told me it needed a new throttle cable becasuse the mower just screams wide open. I replaced it and the cable seems to work fine but there is little to no control over the throttle( I replaced the whole cable unit). It still runs wide open.

Another problem, perhaps related is that I need to pour gas in the carb to start it when cold and if it run out of gas or if it sits too long after running. I am going through a lot of gas as this monster drinks and drinks running wide open.

any ideas?

Are you talking about a KT17 Kohler engine? You would need to disassemble the engine and replace the governor.

That's what me friend was thinking. Is it a major job? I am mechanically inclined when it comes to cars, trucks and tractors but know little about small engines.

It is a Kohler Magnum 14 engine.
