2004 Craftsman 54 inch 27 HP 700 Hours. Will start quickly - will idle and run up to max RPM - when engaging the PTO, most of the time it will stall - sometimes it will run with PTO engaged for a few seconds to a minute or two only. Installed new fuel filter-no change. When running, fuel filter is empty or nearly empty, but fills up when engine is off for a while. Fuel line between tank and filter is clear and fuel will run freely out of fuel line if not connected to filter. Could this be the fuel pump?

WELCOME to LMF...

Some filters are either too restrictive or of such a low capacity that they will not flow enough fuel to keep an engine running... Even if it is the same filter you have always used... You may have one that is too restrictive.
If it will not flow fuel through the filter you have on it... Locate a filter that has a better free flow rate.... :smile:KennyV

Engaging PTO snuffs engine out

Replaced fuel pump. Fuel present at carb, problem continues. Engines runs fine till PTO switch is engaged, engine shuts down immediately. Checked all the lines for vacuum and fuel no problem there. Assuming we are dealing with an electric short perhaps. This is a 2004 Craftsman mower, 54 inch deck , 27 HP engine, 700hrs.

If Not a short... You may have an Open in the PTO switch... OR the seat (operator present) switch, it will automatically shut down the engine if it is not "seeing" a person on the seat... :smile:KennyV

Found and covered a bare wire on the seat (Operator present). No change in problem. I'll recheck it tomorrow when I have time. Thanks

Wire going to the Operator Present switch was worn. Taped it up and rerouted it. Now my blades spin! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
