Hi,

I have a Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine. It has an approx 6" long iron threaded oil drain pipe,
with a threaded elbow and threaded oil plug.

The pipe has come loose from the engine, and I've been able to tighten it, but the elbow winds up facing upwards
when the pipe is at its tightest in the engine.

I think I may have to use some sort of high temperature sealant at each of the thread joints, so that I won't
necessarily have to get the pipes at their tightest (to allow the elbow to face horizontally or lower, to
facilitate a good drain).

Would anyone recommend a sealant for this? (would high temp thread compound or gasket sealant work (or be too
thick/strong))?

thanks for your help in this,
Buck

I've always used plain teflon tape on them, https://www.amazon.com/teflon-tape/s?k=teflon+tape
I service a Command c15 with that same set up with the elbow on the end, i use big pliers or vice grisps, hold the pipe with those, and then use a box end of a wrench that fits around the elbow and turn it (loosening) pointing down, and take the drain out. when its done, spin the elbow back straight up and reinstall the plug.
