Had this mower two years now. Has always whined when in motion. With the age of this mower ( made in 96) would it be worth to go thru the trouble of draining and filling the fluid? I assume the damage is already done. But I'm not sure of changing it would cause more issue.

Well the tranny is obsolete so it is a case of nothing to loose
Clean it thoroughly .
They are made in dust free environments and should be serviced in one as close to that as possible.
The whine is the oil escaping past the pump &/or motor .
In the mean time, check that the belt is in fact turning the pulley and the pulley is turning the shaft .
Check that the bypass lever is actually in the drive position by getting under and moving the lever as far as it will go.
\After that it is rip it out & have a play
they run std car oil
Most 20w 50 synthetic but if yours is leaky, go to a heavier oil ( do not add thickeners like no-leak etc )
You might squeeze a few more season out of it.
You might b able to get a pump/motor replacement kit but we will need to know the make & model number of the box which once was on a sticker on the box.
