I have been chronically bad about leaving gas in my tank and the end of the mowing season. I have heard and read that lawn mowers can be converted to propane. My understanding is that there is about a ten percent loss of power, but that the mower runs cleaner and puts out much less pollutants. I also understand that I want have to deal with ungunking my carb every spring. Have I about done it? Now, how do I make that conversion or to whom can I go to have it done at a reasonable price? All help is appreciated.
When you say propane is "unhandy" do you mean having the tank onboard or are there other "unhandy" factors. I understand that a small tank lasts as long as a tank of gas. I, of course, want it to be safe (or as safe as gasoline is).
I have a tiller with a 6HP B&S, a Yazoo 5hp B&S... I would consider anything under $150. reasonable for converting those small engines. Is it something a reasonably competent person could do with the right directions?
Thanks for you input and I appreciate your advice.
Refueling is VERY unhandy with small tanks, (almost anyone can refill a gas or diesel tank)...
Locating a small light tank will be a problem...
The actual conversion is easy... :smile:KennyV

Kenny, just curious but could'nt you use the kind of tank s that power propane lanterns?I'm not sure you can get them recharged and buying a new one every time you run out would in my book make it way inconvenient...russ

russ... It would need to be larger... the evaporation of the liquid would rapidly freeze the small tank and then it would stop evaporating ... I'm guessing you would need at least a 10 pound size... (About a gallon and a half) to keep the vapor pressure in an operational zone...
Also you are right about inconvenient ...
For a small engine (portable) it's going to be tough to find the size that is large enough to work & small enough to be portable and yet hold enough fuel to run for a reasonable length of time... :smile:KennyV

Hello, I have moved your post to the General Mower Discussion Forum. You will have better luck finding assistance there.
