brake switch

I have a 1995 john deere lawn tractor. When i push on the brake it will always start if the small red light on the circuit board is lit up red. When i let up on the brake and the red light goes off the tractor stalls. Then if i pump the brake pedal maybe 20 times and get the red light to stay on and the tractor starts and when i let off the brake the tractor runs fine. So have the brake switch in my hand but don't know how to test to see if this the problem. I would appreciate any help very very muck Thanks Gobbles
