Blade engagement problem

Hello all. newbie here with a rather stupid question. I just finished rebuilding my first engine. An older Kawasaki FB460V that goes on to my 36" Ransomes machine. Got everything back together and the motor fires up great. Problem I am having is the blades are engaged and the engagement lever is not even set to turn them. I did not have this problem when I removed the engine and I did not install a new belt. I am assuming that is a relatively simple fix, however I can not seem to locate anything wrong. I have the belts routed the same exact way they were before removing the engine, I have the pulleys back on the motor in their original locations. Is it possible that I installed the upper pulley upside down? The only difference is about an 1/8" offset.. Any suggestions would be really helful. Thanks in advance.

does it have blade brakes? or are they stuck off?.....they contact the pulley to stop them when the lever is disengaged

I am not sure. I did not notice anything that would be in contact with any of the pulleys. I certainly did not notice any thing else connected to the lever and rod that controls the tension for the pulley on the deck which is controlled by the lever. I cant find any model number on the mower either so I am having a difficult time finding exploded parts diagrams.

Would the brakes be on top of deck, under deck, under the engine mounting??

i dont see the brakes.......your engagement pulley may not be fully retracting....its the silver one in the top right with the rod attached

thats the one. there are adjustments on the plate that the rod is connected to. I moved it around some and didnt get it to work. The problem I have is, I did not mess with any of this stuff when I pulled the motor off, so I do not know why I would need to adjust it all now. Everything worked fine before pulling the motor.

it sounds like something tightened up a pulley...but i just repaired one that had concrete grass stuck around the pulley....and it never stopped spinning either......that 1/8 offset your talking about could do this too:rolleyes:......take pictures of this engine pulley put back on

Figured it out. Under the deck under the engine there are two "L" brackets that go about an 1/8" away from the belts. I had them in the wrong place and it wasn't keeping the belt away from the pulley when the PTO wasnt engaged. Moved those around a bit and got everything going great. Now to put the For Sale" sign on the beast ad move to the next project. Just got a 36" scag for $100. Pulled the motor apart and found a shattered connecting rod, should be fun!
