B&S oil filter issue

Hey all, I have a B&S Vanguard 18 hp Twin, engine code 350447 1111-E1 0310311. I referenced B&S website and I got a filter code of 491056. Got it in, and the threads fit, but I had to bend the filter 'top' to make it fit. I need maybe 1/2 shorter and it would fit fine. The filter it came with is a Russo L29. I put the L29 back on for now.

So my concern is the Russo L29 is much shorter and a little fatter than the 491056. This makes me feel like it may not be flowing oil as well as the larger filter. Is my assumption correct? I cross referenced the L29 Russo and I found it covers for B&S 492056 so I ordered one of those, but haven't put it on yet.

So, do I need to be worried with the shorter filters? The thread and rubber seal fits fine, just want to know if I could be slowly damaging my motor. Also, if there is something in between that B&S sells that would be sufficient, I'd be willing to nab that.

It is important to note the B&S was swapped in by a previous owner and was not a factory deployed motor in this frame (Cub Cadet 2166). This may be the cause for the fitment issue, but I'm stuck with it and so trying to make the best of it.

Edit - to double check, I did not find a 842941, but I did find a 842921?
