ariens ezr 1742 starting problem

my ariens ezr 1742 will not start just hums when key is turned. I can pull either handle in and hum will stop. cannot trace down short or whatever it is.

Three possible causes. Low battery, stripped bendix gear or bad starter.

I just bought a zero turn mine did the same-thing the stud that comes out of the starter was lose I snugged the 7/16 (top nut up) and the short wire from the solenoid to the starter had a crack in the eyelet i changed it and it fired right up not saying that's your problem but its worth checking ....let us know what u find
