I recently picked up a yardman self driven mower which are not that common in the uk, it starts when primed on the first pull but it does not run properly, it produces black smoke and does not pick up when the throttle is adjusted it simply seems to idle at a steady speed and occasionally misfires although it does cut on flat ground with fairly short grass it can't handle anything more and cuts out.
The self drive works when engaged but again seems to lack power although it does respond to being adjusted. i could do with advice on what to do first to try and get her running properly? I intend to replace the plug but what should the gap be? How do check if the throttle is working or adjust ther tension? and is there anything else i need to be trying? Any advice appreciated, it's around 10 years old.

Black smoke means to much fuel is being burned . If your not handy at removing and cleaning the carb use some carb cleaning in the fuel tank - like Marvel Mystery Oil - fuel cleaner here in USA
Just let it idle - don't skimp on the fuel cleaner but do not dilute the gasoline so much it won't ignite .

I would guess that your rings are shelled out. The smoke could be an indication of the engine burning oil, and low compression would account for all of the problems you mentioned.
