Hard to start Briggs . I've been told to set the valves and don't know the valve gap specifications . Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thanks, stub1

.003-.005 IN .005-.007 EX Remove the spark so you can see the piston move up and down or insert a pencil to monitor piston position. You want slightly past TDC compression which will be the rotation with both valves closed. If one is open need to make another revolution and then stop just slightly on the down stroke after reaching the top.

Or you could just use the old method of adjusting valves one at a time. To me it easier than hunting a measuring stick to get the 1/4" pass tdc compression stroke. For some reason everytime go to get the stick it was gone.

Also be aware to check for the ACR bump of the intake valve after adjustment as they do break on these camshafts more than usual.

Hope not as it appears that they are still on back order from April 2021, just check Power Distributors. I reckon I going start selling Kohler engines as replacement for these Briggs engines or some other OEM engine.

While you are at it....

1.Have you ever pulled the metal engine shroud and cleaned the top of the block and cooling fins? This is a yearly maintenance item in ALL engine manuals. Neglect this and you are looking at engine damage.

2.Need to pull the head. Remove all carbon from the piston face, head and valve area. Chunks of carbon will flake off getting between the piston and rings. These ultra hard chunks will gouge the cylinder bore causing the engine to smoke. Should be done say every 3-5 years. Depends on how much you mow. Commercial lawn crew, more often. Home owner say every 5-7 years'ish.

Verify which valve is which so you are confident you are on the proper TDC stroke. There are 2 TDC strokes in a 4 stroke engine. Double check yourself......
