LT1000 (31C707) Acts like valves need adjustment

This engine was not treated well before I found it. I put on a new head, lapped the valves, replaced broken push rods, and rebuilt the carb a few years ago. Idea of a new machine or a new engine is pretty appealing at this point

LT1000 (31C707) Acts like valves need adjustment

I set the intake to .004 & exhaust to .006. I usually set one valve while the other is open, is this bad practice?

LT1000 (31C707) Acts like valves need adjustment

Watched the valves today and didn't see any bump for compression release. Seems like it'll start reliably if I turn the flywheel to the end of the the combustion stroke by hand then turn it over. Hopefully I can make it to the end of the season

LT1000 (31C707) Acts like valves need adjustment

When I hold the key down it doesn't budge, slowly turns, then lurches forward and repeats the cycle. I just did the valves and both rods seem to be opening the valves. I'll have to wait until the morning to get back at it

LT1000 (31C707) Acts like valves need adjustment

I have a craftsman LT1000 with the briggs 17.5 31C707 engine. Flywheel was turning really slow while trying to start, so I figured it needed a valve adjustment again. Adjusted the valves twice and no changes. Flywheel spins freely with the plug out. What could be the problem?

Here is what I've checked so far: drained and refilled the oil plug is sparking / tried new plug flywheel key is intact and aligned tried a different carb / sprayed carb...

    Bad Head Gasket?

I have a 17.5 briggs engine (31c707 0230-E1) on a craftsman LT-1000. I recently replaced the carb after the air filter became flooded with gas. I was never really satisfied with the replacement carb as it like to surge at times, but it works. Now, a few weeks later, the mower is blowing white...

New carb and Engine is surging/Odd throttle control

I have a craftsman lt-1000 with a briggs 31C707-0230-E1. Air filter filled with gas, so I took the plug out, fuel line off the carb, left the oil valve open for a few days. Installed a cheap new carb yesterday along with new filters and fuel line then put everything back together. At first the...
