    Onan P218G, never used

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I'm happy with the engine on my 318 so I'm not swapping. I was going to try to help connect him with the right person to buy it. I was trying to determine a value for an unused Onan P218.

    Onan P218G, never used

No doubt whoever ends up with it would be wise to go ahead and purchase a complete engine gasket and seal kit. And while his shop is moderately climate controlled we are in Alabama so you can't avoid the heat. He is going to bring it to me to look over so I can put a camera in it and check for...

    Onan P218G, never used

I know someone who has an Onan P218G still in the crate. It's been stored in his shop for 15-20 years. It's never been started, never been mounted, still in the crate. I have a 1987 JD 318 with a P218 so I have a general idea of pricing for used engines and parts but I have no idea how to...

    LX279 muffler needed

Anyone have any leads on where to locate a muffler for a JD LX279? It's a 17hp liquid cooled Kawasaki. The one I have is beyond repair. Thanks in advance.

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

I replaced the fuel pump, no change. I dropped the bowl on the carb, bowl was clean. Checked the float, held it level with my finger and it cut off the fuel supply. I went ahead and removed the float and needle to remove any possible debris. Put it back together. Still pumping A LOT of fuel...

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

Thanks Bert, I'll check that as you described. I just find it extremely unlikely that both the OEM carb AND the replacement carb would both fail in exactly the same way. That would be quite the coincidence and I have a hard time accepting coincindences.

And Bert, it's a FD501V and it is the carb pictured above.

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

I don't even know how to measure the fuel pressure so I know I don't have the equipment for it. I don't typically diagnose by replacing parts but if the fuel pump is the most likely cause I don't mind spending the $15 on a new one. I just needed to know if a fuel pump could fail to cause...

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

The OEM carb was leaking fuel out of the top vent tube. I replaced it with an aftermarket carb that did EXACTLY the same thing. Common sense tells me something else caused both carbs to malfunction in the exact same way. I don't know that it's the fuel pump but I don't know what else it could...

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

The fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb was stiff but not deteriorated, it was less than 3 years old but I went ahead and replaced it as well. I can't think of any other cause than the fuel pump but don't know what would cause a fuel pump to do that.

Gas leaking from carb top vent tube

I've got a JD LX279 with liquid cooled 2 cylinder Kawasaki. It was running rough, seemed to be missing if I'm running over rough ground. I noticed some gas coming from the top vent tube. I took the carb off to clean it and stripped the main jet trying to remove it. I replaced the carb with a...

    Matching GCV190 crankshaft

It was installed correctly. My bigger concern is the Honda specs show the crankpin measurement to be 29.98mm and the one I received is 30.00mm. Are there any GCV190 crankshafts with a crankpin larger than 29.98mm? If not then this one was simply manufactured out of spec. I can get the mower...

    Matching GCV190 crankshaft

Yes, I understand that. Called Honda and gave them that complete mower code and they matched it to the crank I mentioned above. When I pulled the old crank the numbers stamped into it were different than the numbers stamped into the new crank they sent. The crankpin (journal) is just slightly...

    Matching GCV190 crankshaft

What I'm calling the journal, where the connecting rod meets the crankshaft is technically called the crankpin. The specs for the GCV190 show the clearance should be 29.98. The one they sent is 30.00mm. Possible it just wasn't milled to specs and is defective?

    Matching GCV190 crankshaft

That doesn't help, identifies the engine as GCVLA-BHH. Parts diagram shows one crank with 8 different options. My measurements match Option 9. (Not a typo, there is no #2 or #7 option). The measurement of my crank journal is 29.96mm, the replacement journal is 30.00mm. So close I would think...

    Matching GCV190 crankshaft

Anyone know a source to reference a Honda GCV190 crankshaft based on the numbers stamped in the counterweights of the shaft? Called Honda and provided complete engine code. Crankshaft they sent has a larger crank journal and when the connecting rod is torqued to spec it locks in place, can't...

Need a Tuff Torq pro (follow up)

Follow up, so I swapped the position of the wedge block. Put it all back together, waited a day for the gasket to cure and got it mounted today. So, that little pin that goes in the centercase, the one they tell you to be sure it doesn't fall out.....let's say it falls out. I'm guessing that...

Need a Tuff Torq pro (follow up)

Good grief, I know exactly what you're talking about. I thought the big end of the wedge was supposed to be facing up. Can't believe I did that! Crap, time to pull the transaxle, drain the fluid.....all over again. Dadgummit!! Well, thanks for letting me know.

Need a Tuff Torq pro (follow up)

I picked up a JD X300 with a Tuff Torq K46BC that was losing power, determined the cylinder pump blocks were worn. I had a spare K46BT that was supposedly running strong when one axle broke. I swapped the two cylinder blocks from the 46BT with the broken shaft to the 46BC on the X300. My...

    Governor question

Update: I cracked the case to check the governor. Governor appeared fine. Spent $40 on sump and crankshaft gaskets and put it back together and it's running fine, not dropping rpm's. The only thing I can guess is that something in the governor linkage was in a bind. Now for the the bad...

    Governor question

Among the many things I had replaced on this mower was the Ignitor/CDI control module. One cylinder was not firing and the diagnoses led to the CDI. I purchased an aftermarket CDI but it corrected the issue and both cylinders were firing correctly. Could the CDI cause the drop.in RPM's under...

    Governor question

Responding to several suggestions: it has a brand new 550cca battery. I used a laser temp gauge, both exhaust pipes got up over 700 degrees. The engine model # as stated in the original post is a FD501V, single bore carb. Update: I have two LX279's so I did an engine swap today. The good...

    Governor question

Once again, the rpm's drop when I engage the PTO or when going up an incline (with the PTO off) so I'm pretty sure I can rule out anything with the PTO or the deck. And I doubt low tire pressure is an issue.
  30. A

    Governor question

Wow, I didn't even think about the tire pressure being low, I'll bet that's why the engine drops 1200 rpm's. Thanks

    Governor question

I did have to take the throttle plate off when removing the carb. When I put it back on I adjusted the plate to roughly 3600 rpm and tightened it well. The plate has not moved and it holds the correct rpm at high throttle, until I engage the PTO or travel up an incline, then rpm's drop to...

    Governor question

I have another LX279 that I use regularly. I swapped the governor springs and there is no change. The mower runs excellent, starts easy and idles good up and down. It has no issues until you engage the PTO or drive it up an incline and then the RPM's drop significantly. What else could the...

    Governor question

I have a Kawi FD501V twin cylinder liquid cooled on a JD LX279. I've had to replace a number of things, to include the carb. It was running very rough and the jets were seized inside and I ruined the jets getting them out so I replaced the carb. I've replaced the voltage regulator that was...

    Removing a seized PTO

An aftermarket PTO is around $120. Fortunately I had a spare pulley and PTO off an X300. The PTO seems to be about a half inch taller and requires a longer shaft bolt but appears that it will work. Thanks Bert, after what I went through the first thing I did was cover it with anti seize.

    Removing a seized PTO

Well, I destroyed a PTO and the pulley above it but it's off. Never seen anything sezied like that was. I welded extensions onto a 2 way puller to get behind the PTO but still destroyed it getting it off. It left the collar and bearing on the shaft and after I got the engine off I cut those...

    Removing a seized PTO

Any tips from you pros on removing an electric PTO that is seized on the shaft of a 17hp Kawasaki on an LX279? The 3 arm puller won't reach around the PTO to catch on the pulley above it. I've tried the air hammer/downward pressure trick. I'm reluctant to use heat because I don't want to...

I personally own an LX279 and a 3 year old X300. The new X300 is absolute junk compared to the LX models.

    Well, they did it...

JD found yet another way to screw over their customers. As if the seats and hoods weren't bad enough.... I've only recently started working on X series mowers, until recently there haven't been many on the market to fix up for resale. Working on an X300 today and had the pleasure of finding...

FD501V liquid cooled engine coolant leak

Update, engine has been running great, no smoke, no problems. I've determined the problem was a warped intake port. I resurfaced them, new gaskets sealed with Indian Head and no more problems.

flywheel stops when I try to start it.

This is the same problem I just dealt with. Exact same problem. Put your hand over the air intake into the carb as you first try to start it. That will keep it from drawing air into the engine and reduce the internal compression. If it turns over and starts while doing then your compression...

    Leak down test

It was originally surging, I cleaned that carb and no change. I put on a brand new carb, fresh ethanol free gas, no change at all. I cleaned and checked that new carb, no change. I found that I had a leaking intake valve, I corrected that and it is now running smooth with no surging. I have...

    Leak down test

Follow up, I was on the compression stroke, I use a glove over the compression tester hose to determine when it is pushing air out and then I find TDC. The valves were fully closed. I removed the rocker from the intake after I heard and felt the air blowing out of the carb, removed the rocker...

    Leak down test

I recently posted about a Briggs 17.5 hp with a high compression issue. I resolved that by replacing a camshaft that had a busted compression release. The engine starts easy now and runs strong but is surging badly. I have replaced the old carb and no change whatsoever. Adjustment to the air...

    Briggs 17.5hp 31c707-3346-g6

Opened up the engine and the compression release was in pieces. Unfortunately when inpicked up this mower the valve cover was missing so I have no engine code. This engine does not have an oil pump. The only camshaft I have found is 793880 but it has the grooves for an oil pump. I believe I...

Need help, I'm at a loss. Picked up a freebie Troy Bilt Pony rider, no history on it. Valve cover was missing, not sure if they tinkered with the valves. Starter was fried internally and carb was trashed. I had a replacement carb with a fixed air mixture screw, used it just to get it...
