Cub Cadet zero turn ZT1 50" no start, just clicks and solenoid tests good.

First thing I would try is run your jumper negative to the battery negative and then touch the jumper positive to the starter power post. If the starter does not spin, the starter has failed. If the starter spins, you have a safety switch or wire issue. Unbolt the right-side plastic panel and...

    surging Kholer engine

What are you calling a headmaster? Is that the cylinder head? A regional term I have never heard of? Did you resurface the head with fine sandpaper on a good flat surface like a glass tabletop before installing it? Was the gasket replaced and the head bolts torqued properly? In each cylinder...

Scams when buying a used mower: BEWARE!

Advertised sales are nice but are easily a false bait. With any purchase like this, don't trust anything about it unless you can talk face to face, and you test run the equipment. There are too many people who will gladly take your money and tell both impressive and pitiful stories to get it...

Kohler K91 Model 4197: Worth Saving?

The Predator engines are not built to last for long. I would get this Kohler running and keep it for a backup spare. The Kohler is hands down the better engine. Isn't the K91 a points ignition engine? He may have assumed it was a bad coil and it only needs a good tune up. Points gap: .020...

Am I able to adjust Kohler 7400 V twin valves slightly tighter for performance? It is pretty sluggish accelerating from idle to max speed.

Have you verified both cylinders are operating? These engines will run on a single cylinder and not vibrate. Try using a spray bottle and spray a shot of water on each exhaust outlet tube near the head. The water should boil off immediately. If it does not on one side, there is likely a coil...

Am I able to adjust Kohler 7400 V twin valves slightly tighter for performance? It is pretty sluggish accelerating from idle to max speed.

Sounds like you have a fuel supply issue like a dirty carburetor or a mounting gasket leaking. Adjusting valves too tight will result in faster valve and seat wear. These clearances are designed in to compensate for heat expansion of the components. Valve clearances are recommended to be only...

    surging Kholer engine

Have you verified both cylinders are actually firing? Spray a shot of water on each exhaust pipe and watch for it to boil off immediately. The one not boiling off is the none firing cylinder. These V-twin engines will fool a person because there is no imbalance/ vibration. Pull the upper fan...

Briggs 22hp twin head bolt torque

Around my area, I'm "blessed" (cursed) with people racking up their credit cards to buy $5000.00 dollar mowers instead of maintaining or repairing the ones that they have. It is seldom I even sell a decent used mower these days because everyone wants new. When it comes to weed eaters...

    B & S 17.5 HP Problem

Gee! Everyone wants to sound scientific. Keep it simple. Pull the plug and remove the rocker cover. Rotate the engine by hand in the normal cranking rotation and watch the intake valve movement. If the compression release is working, there be a quick bump of the intake valve before it opens...

    Generator not taking load

The Wattage rating numbers on generators can be confusing because many buyers/users do not understand "surge rating" as compared to constant load rating. Consumers usually buy underpowered portable generators and are disappointed when it will not operate everything in their house or shop...

    B & S 17.5 HP Problem

I have a lot of older Briggs & Stratton engines still going strong, most are the much older flat head design. For longevity, I gotten the best life out of Kohler engines when it comes to riders. Honda is a close second when it comes to other power equipment. The way emissions laws are going...

    B & S 17.5 HP Problem

I have replaced a few camshafts due to a bad compression release mechanism, but most of the time owners don't want to fix them. I have 3 of them right now in my scrap mower collection. I don't trust the replacement cams offered enough to invest the money and fix them myself. I have had too many...

    Oil coming out fuel pump

Pull the head back off and get some 220-grit wet/dry sandpaper and a very good true flat surface like a tempered glass panel. Lay the paper on the flat surface and hold it. Place the gasket surface of the head on the sandpaper and slowly scrub it around to sand the gasket surface. Look at the...

    B & S 17.5 HP Problem

Hi Gary 8241, From your description, the compression release mechanism made onto the camshaft has given up. What is worse about the situation is that aftermarket cams and even new Briggs cams are unreliable.

    133412 0059 01 coil going out

Maybe, plastic dental toothpicks would work better as long as it's not forced, they're tougher than wooden toothpicks. The ones I have the most trouble with are super tiny jet orifices in the import scooters. Usually, I have to use a single wire strand out of an old section of throttle cable...

    133412 0059 01 coil going out

The true test will be under load, if it bogs, the main jet will need better cleaning other than just stabbing a small random gauge wire through it. Usually, If I don't have a correct jet pin tool, I will put a wire through and then turn, spin the jet on the wire and use some carb spray to clean...

    Substitue for Kohler spark plug

I don't use the J19LM plugs very often because the heat range is so high. Going old school, I normally run and engine 15 minutes or so (high RPM under load), pull out the plug(s) and expect to see a very faint light tan appearance on the electrode porcelain. I have found high heat ranges are...

    Substitue for Kohler spark plug

Hello ILENGINE, I agree with you when it comes to most automotive applications, but I just have not had issues with Champion on the small engine stuff. It's for sure most resistor plugs are worthless if they have been dropped on a concrete floor or mishandled, because the barrel resistor...

To buy or not to buy

"Run Forrest Run" This is more than "just needs a starter". If you are a mower mechanic, this would be a great deal even if it needed an engine replaced. But, if you are a DIY novice with limited experience, let it go.

    Carburetor for Briggs E1550 engine

Hi Greg, I've installed a lot of Ebay carburetors over the years, and I guess I've been lucky. I seldom deal with Amazon due to past problems. Used equipment is hard to repair and turn any profit these days, but there are a lot of people who cannot afford to buy new equipment or OE parts...

Common Reasons Why Your Weed Eater Won’t Start

In my area very few people buy the expensive pre-mix or special oil, they prefer to mix their own. Usually, it is "by eye" and if they see light smoke, they figure it is good enough. I run across carbon choked mufflers with and without exit screens or spark arrestors quite often. Usually, I...

    Generator not taking load

Can you provide a picture and the ID plate information of this generator. As a general rule, most American portable generators are governed at max 3600 RPM (loaded) to provide approximately 60Hz. Very few have a low idle unless it has controller solenoid operation. Canada and Europe run their...

What's the Best Riding Lawn Mower for ~2 acres

Stop buying hardware "box store" models, they do not have the quality or reliability of a commercial grade. I suggest a rider with a minimum 25hp Kohler, and a 54"-60" cut. Look for a heavy welded "fabricated" cutter deck and stay away from the stamped 1-piece formed decks. Name brands are...

    Ferris 500S with B&S CXI2500: Emissions question?

To hone or not to hone

When installing new rings, always hone the cylinder with a fine grit hone. Honing will "break in" the new rings so they conform to the true cylinder diameter. Without honing it will introduce oil consumption. The "crosshatch" pattern that honing provides, prevents oil from having a straight...

John Deere Z335E dead electrical system

    Fuel in the crankcase?

Are you also factoring that an average gallon of gas weighs 6 pounds and that weight (per gallon) is applying pressure to the exit nipple to get out of the tank if it is a bottom feed style? If it is a siphon feed style like many zero turns are, the fuel is siphoned/ sucked "uphill" by the pulse...

    Bad boy revolt not charging

You need to quit jump starting it and put the battery on a charger to get it fully charged. Fortunately, you have not burned up the stator (yet). The charging system on the machine is for maintaining a fully charged battery, not to recharge a low or dead one. Once a fully charged battery is...

    Fuel in the crankcase?

I usually see 3-4 every mowing season. I think it has a lot to do with the Texas heat where a I'm at, combined with modern Ethanol fuel. Regardless of the tank height, a leaking pulse pump will create a siphon affect. It's funny to find a tank practically empty, but the crankcase is full of fuel.

    FR691v loss of power/backfire

Cub Cadet zero turn ZT1 50" no start, just clicks and solenoid tests good.

Connect the negative jumper cable to the negative battery terminal, touch the positive jumper clamp to the starter power stud. If it spins over there is a wiring issue such as the frame ground. If it does not spin over, the starter brushes are shot, and you need a starter.
