Just set a 31c707 17.5 hp into a Murray frame
Wiring harness was stripped from mower, no big deal. My question is how do I wire the stator in to charge the battery
Have a pigtail with a red and a black wire from the stator
Can I wire it straight to the battery or solenoid? Or do I need to find a wiring harness?

The red wire should have a bump under shrink tube just above the connector. that wire can be connected directly to either the battery or the solenoid. the black wire should be AC for headlights. Just make sure the black wire is for headlights and not a wire going to the ignition coil for the kill circuit.

Your configuration sounds like the 3/5 dual circuit stator. There should be a diode in the red wire above the white double connector. That bump is the diode. Can you post a picture of the connector.

The diode/bump acts as a non regulated half wave rectifier. So all you need to do is plug a mating connector into that white connector that attaches the red wire with the battery.
