They can get by with a light flywheel because the blade acts as a flywheel and on the bbc it has to have the heavy flywheel so it will run. With no blade on it, it will kick back and not run.

I bought a mower from a guy who told me that over the winter it got water in the cylinder and froze and busted the head. Took the head off and the cylinder and head were clean, no rust. Next time I saw him he admitted to using starting fluid on it. Sure did bust the head.

Did you replace the fuel line? Could be the fuel line is deteriorated on the inside and parts of it crumbled out and got between the needle and seat. I always replace the fuel filter and line between the filter and carb when replacing carb.

Yes it took them over 20 years to fix the problem on the command twin. Finally they put a fire ring on the head gasket. It was a real problem before the did that but very little since they fixed it.

Kohler engines don't have a compression release. I think I would go back and check the valve adjustment. There is no port where you are talking about. Did it blow a head gasket?

Did you level the deck? If the front of the deck droops that will pitch the spindles forward and cause the belt to be looser. It will also throw the belts out of alignment
