I don't know what the steel composition of the average mower blade is but good luck hand filing the .250 thick marbain steel blades on a Ferris or JD or other commercial mowers that use them.
Everybody has their way and it is the best way. At least to them. I use a 4.5" angle grinder with a 36 grit flap wheel and an All American sharpener.

I do absolutely nothing to my 36hp Ferris at the end of the season other than filling both tanks up with regular pump gas. No fuel shutoff. Sits for about 5 months and always starts right up for the first mow of the season.
I guess i am the evil shop. I pressure wash pretty much every mower than comes through the shop. I have the engine at full throttle and i stay away from the electrics. I usually let it run for 15 to 20 mins after i wash it. Been doing it for many years. I have done some mowers every year for 10...
I feel for you. As a kid i had 20/400 vision with bad astigmatism. I have heard every coke bottle glasses joke there is. In the mid 80's got radial keratomy surgery (pre lasik) and got to the point i could see well enough to 20/40 with glasses. Then cataracts about 10 years ago. Eagle eye was...
Yours is new compared to mine. Mine is a 36" with a 10hp Tecumseh VH100. Most Buntons cane in 2 types. The older variable speed pulley type and the newer gear transmission. Except for a few parts for different deck size most bunton parts are the same for each type. Find a parts list for your...
Clean and check both ends of the battery cables.
Connect your voltmeter from "s" start terminal of ignition switch and solenoid trigger wire with wire connected to solenoid. Turn key to start position and crank engine. Anything more than a half volt is a problem.
My A&I regional salesman showed up this week after 5 yrs and was wondering why my purchases had dropped so much.
Translation
" why am i not making money off you."
Was at my JD dealer i get parts from today. Parts guy told me instead of 2 days for parts they are lucky to get them in 2 weeks and sometimes 3. Their commercial customers and having fits he said.
I still have 2 engines from the racing days. Used but good tanks. Like star saving for my own use. Got a new tank from a 3 hp but is the old style. I think i stil have about 4 or 5 1/4" valve guides.
I have the tools but haven't used them for years. Seems like every 5hp briggs i see has a pile of rust for a gas tank. I quit trying to save them. Too many hours customers don't want to pay for.
The guides are still available. You need some special Briggs tools. 2 reamers a driver and a centering cone. A shop should have these tools. Takes about 10 minutes to install the guides. The valves need to be lapped in after that.
Welcome to the wonderful world of sh.... er.. stuff we don't need on a lawn mower. Electronics out of china are relatively cheap and the marketing dick heads love to put as many useless bells and whistles on and the new age engineers are into the "cool factor". When it works it is cool but when...
I have a ferris 3100z it has 4 wheel independent suspension. Difference is night and day compared to a Z with no suspension. My yard has been decimated by moles and i still mow at top speed. Something like 13mph
The smaller ferris's don't have as good a suspension package.
Interesting how things have changed in 50 years. I have a snowblower frankensteined onto a 1975 sears ST12 made by Roper. By today's standards it is a tank. Frame sides are 1/4" thick plate. 6 speed Peerless transmission is used by mini tractor pullers. It still has the original Goodyear tires...
You can take a stock 5hp briggs 130232 engine and remove the govenor and replace the oil dipper with a better one and the engine will happily turn 6500RPM and not break. Most racers geared their carts to top out at 6000 to 6200 RPM. The weak link is not the rod but the valve guides wearing out...
I have used both resistor and non resistor plugs j19lm and rj19lm in push mowers and never saw a difference. Some guys see a difference in hand helds. I pretty much use resistor in all 2 strokes any more. Can't remember last time i ordered non resistor plugs for OPE. I do run nonresistor champ...
When i joined the army i went to military intelligence basic morse school. You got 13 weeks to be able to copy 18 WPM. Wash out rate was 50%. You sat 55 minutes per hour copying code 8 hours a day 5 days a week for 13 weeks. In my prime i could copy 22 WPM of canned code. But that was 40+ years ago.

Oh yeah. Once i undo everything the owner did i will figure out what is really wrong with it. He screwed up the valves and the carb linkage and all the muffler bolts are stripped out and one of the valve cover bolts wasn't metric.
And the hits just keep on coming.
A local dealer told me his supplier told him that briggs has stopped ordering engine parts for the spares system. Hope it is a bad rumor but What does that tell you?
A restaurant hired me to fix a commercial Bunn coffee maker and i had to provide a signed statement that the silocone RTV i used to seal it back up was NSF approved food grade. Same for the grease i used on a meat slicer.
And to think that for over 100 years they made internal combustion engines with no oil filter. Many aircraft engines don't have oil filters. Even the Volkswagen beetle doesn't have an oil filter. Now we all know that if you don't use the finest oil and filter your lawnmower engine it will self...
Motor oil
Hydro oil
Spark plugs
Time for an oil filter thread
Stens for most everything.
Briggs, kohler, Kawasaki, John Deere don't make oil filters.
It begins.
I believe the original plug in question is of
CW? Set BFO slightly off center of freq and set bandwidth to 1 KC. Will sound like it is under water but will eliminate most the crap. Did you ever have to deal with the Russian woodpecker?
I have it on good authority that more than one alphabet agency has had you under surveillance for quite some time.
And this coming from a guy who actually used to do intelligence gathering for the NSA in the 70's
I would put in a new sparkplug. The chineese plugs are notorious for being bad out of the box. I have not had much luck with any of the chineese plugs.
Been there and done that. Amazing what 20 or 30 million sheets will do to metal parts that are supposed to never wear out.
We got the "best oil" thread
We got the "best sparkplug" thread
Now we got the "best way to clean a small hole in a piece of brass" thread
And to avoid controversy i will...
While we all have our favorite method to clean jets. Some of which have been blessed by angels and others which will result in the end of life on the planet. One of the uses for the torch tip cleaners is to slightly open up the main jets on these new mowers that are so lean they surge. I know...
Fitted a few HF predator engines to replace 5hp briggs. Seem to work OK. No customer complaints. For name brand engines northern tool and small engine warehouse.
