Repairs Honda HR214SX Tranmission Issues

Here's what the ratchets look like.



They fit in the wheel. The pawls engage the lugs in the wheels. They're what make that clicking sound you should hear when you're pushing the mower.



The fit in the wheel like this.



That slot fits over the pin in the drive shaft.



The bolt that holds the wheel on is 14mm and you'll have to hold the drive shaft in place with locking pliers to get it to turn out.



Be sure to study the exploded diagrams for the Roto Stop system before you go taking it apart. I have a series of photos on that too, if you want to see how it goes together.

By that method I told you in post #2.
"Turn the engine off. Engage the drive bar on the handle bar. Pull the mower backwards. The wheels should lock up and not roll. Let go of the drive bar. Roll the mower forward. You should hear the clicking of the ratchets."

That series of pictures is of the left wheel, so yours should look like that when putting it back together. With the mower up on it's side like in the pictures, you should be able to turn the rear wheels forward and hear the clicking sound. Turn them backwards and the power shaft (axel) should turn with the wheel.

Another thing, only turn the mower on it's side with the carb on the top. If you turn it up on it's side with the carb on the down side, oil will run from the engine through the breather tube into the air cleaner, so don't do that. Just rais the back end of the mower up and block it to remove the right side wheel.

To be honest, some of the best money spent on these things is the Honda Shop Manual.

There's a right and left to those ratchets and if they're reversed, they won't engage.

Will not lock up when engaged and pulling mower backwards.

Here is the page from the shop manual and parts catalog; carefully inspect, clean, and grease as necessary. As others have said, pay particular attention to the pawl assembly. There is a left and right version, and they are not interchangeable.

Here's my left side wheel and ratchet.

Here's the right side wheel and ratchet.

Look closely at the exploded diagram Robert posted. The ratchets are parts #1 (left wheel) and #5 (right wheel) and note the direction the pawls are facing. Put them on your mower that direction and barring any problems with the internals of the transmission, which I'd be surprised if there was, and incorrectly adjusted cables, you should be good to go.

Ok, Looks to be right from what I can tell in the diagrams.

I need 2 of part number # 18- 91054VA4800 but its discontinued.
